29 Times and Counting

1 John 1:9 - "If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

In just a few days my wife will give birth to our third son.  I eagerly anticipate this day and am thankful for the faithfulness of God as the day approaches.  One of the most special things to me about this whole process is when we go to the doctor and we get to hear the heartbeat.  I haven't missed one yet.  There is something extremely special to me about hearing the little fellas heartbeat, there always has been.  When I heard it for the first time with our first son I cried, and each time I have been amazed and thankful to God who gives the gift of life.

We are at 29 times and counting.  Next week (if my math is correct) will mark the 30th time, 10 with each boy.  Each times marks a miracle from God for which I am thankful.

Today I can't help but be thankful with a solemn spirit however, for today marks the 40th anniversary of our countries Roe vs. Wade decision.  Forty years ago our country legalized abortion  Forty years ago our country gave people the right to silence the heartbeat.  So while I am thankful for the 29 times I've got to hear my boys and for all the times that I've felt it beating in their chest, I mourn at the loss of 55 million children.

Children of all races, and shapes and sizes.  Children who all had a heartbeat.  Children who won't get the privilege of life here, but who I fully believe have inherited life with Jesus in a place called heaven.  Their hearts may have been silenced here, but God's heart toward them wasn't silenced nor will it ever be.  The Father truly did welcome them home.

I have become much more burdened over abortion recently than I have been in the past.  Perhaps it’s because now I'm a parent and I know the value of life and of children.  But I think it is also because  I was adopted when I was 10 days old.  Perhaps it was because my adoption happened 41 years ago.

Perhaps if it was 40 years ago I wouldn't be here today.  Maybe because of that I realize that there is an alternative to abortion.  It's called adoption.  I was given to my parents when I was 10 days old and they have loved me unconditionally ever since and for that I am forever thankful.

Today there are millions of childless couples just like my parents were 41 years ago, just waiting and hoping and praying for a baby.  A baby that they would love to hear and feel its heartbeat.  Many of them won't get the chance because of the horror of abortion.  Let that number sink in 55 million children.  By comparison 1.2 million Americans have been killed in ALL the wars our county has fought in.

Because of that I pray for an end to abortion and I hope that you will sincerely join me in that endeavor.  I also pray for the childless couples who so desperately want a baby.  I pray for the mothers considering abortion.  I pray for their families.  But if we stop there we have forgotten a crucial component of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we also need to pray for and love those women (and men) who have participated in an abortion.

Are they sinners? Yes, but I can say that because we all are.  The Bible makes it extremely clear, "we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God."  I was adopted by a loving Christian family when I was just an infant but even more than that I was adopted by a loving Heavenly Father, who will never leave me or forsake me.  A Father who washed my sins away.  A Father who extended me grace, the same grace that everyone needs, especially those who have participated in abortion.

The Bible says "if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."  That means any sin.  Regardless of what it is, if we repent and turn to Him, if we place our faith in Him we will be forgiven.  I thankful for that.  For I definitely needed it.  I needed His forgiveness, I needed to be adopted into His family.  Many others do as well.

So pray.  Pray diligently for an end to abortion.  Pray that our culture will once again value life.  Pray for families who want to adopt a child.  And pray for those who are lost.  Those who do not know Jesus, those who need to be adopted into His family.   Pray  for those caught up in any of the sins of this world, pray for them to be set free.  After all Jesus said, "I have come to proclaim freedom to the captives."  Even those held captive by the guilt of sin…...any sin.  Thanks be to God that IF we confess  then He forgives, that is the promise of the Father.
