Anticipation

Anticipation

Revelation 22:20 - "He who testifies to these things says, 'Surely I am coming soon.' Amen, come Lord Jesus."

3 hours and 16 minutes, give or take…….that's how long it is until the kickoff of this years National Championship football game.  Alabama vs. Notre Dame, many of the broadcasters are calling it the most anticipated college football game of the year, perhaps in history.  2 storied programs vying for the right to be called the National Champion.

I've been an Alabama fan since I was 2 years old and saw that their mascot was an elephant.  When I was a baby my cousin gave me a stuffed elephant as a present, and it went everywhere I did.  Then when I saw Big Al, the loveable elephant roaming the sidelines of the Crimson Tide, I was instantly a fan.

I've been with them through the good times, the great times, the in between times, the low times and the really low times.  I've been there for the highs and the lows.  So I anticipate tonight with a giddy feeling in my stomach (T minus 3 hours and 10 minutes now).

Around midnight tonight a champion will be crowned and a celebration will ensue.  There will be happiness and rejoicing.  One team will be jubilant, the other not so much.  Fans will rejoice and fans will mourn. Some will smile extra wide tomorrow, while others will call in and take a sick day.  But in reality as much as I love it and as much as I am excited just thinking about, it is just a game.  Life will go on pretty much the same no matter who wins tonight.

We anticipate the big match up, but that anticipation is not life changing.  It may excite us, it may raise our blood pressure, it may cause us to stay up later than usual, and it may even make us act unusually crazy, but it won't change our lives.

Transformation doesn't come from that type of anticipation.  True transformation comes from anticipating something far richer and more meaningful than a game.  True transformation comes from anticipating the return of Jesus Christ.  C.S. Lewis rightly observes, "it is since we have ceased to think of the next world that we have become so ineffective in this one."

Everyday we ought to live with a heavenly focus, keeping our eyes on Jesus, and His return.   When we do that it changes us and it transforms us.  No wonder Paul calls us to "comfort and encourage each other with (words about the return of Jesus)".   Why? Because it gives us hope and encouragement to remember that this world is not all there is, and that Jesus is preparing a place for us.  It is a transformational truth.

That's why Peter writes in 2 Peter 3:11-13 and says, since Jesus is returning live your lives in holiness.  While you wait for the coming of the Lord live in godliness, always remembering that Jesus is returning and that one day there will be a new heaven and a new earth.  So live in newness of life, not like you used to live.  Jesus is returning, anticipate that because it will change your life.  It will transform you.

Less than 3 hours until kickoff I can't wait, I'm in for the night ready to watch…….unless Jesus returns and then it'll be far better than any football game.
