How Can We Do That?

Hebrews 2:16 - "For surely it is not angels that He helps, but He helps the offspring of Abraham."

Do you ever take time to notice people?  When I was younger I used to go to Gatlinburg with my parents and my mom would sit for hours (it was probably one a few minutes but I was a young kid) just watching people.  While she was doing that I was just say "get up lets go, we've got all this stuff to do today. Lets not just sit around."  And of course she wouldn't immediately move, so I would demand that much louder, which would finally end with me asking the question, "what are you doing anyway?"

Her reply? "I'm watching people."  And I remember thinking, watching people why on earth would you want to do that, we've got places to go and things to do.  Let's quit wasting time watching people.

I remember even asking her one time "why do you want to watch people? What's so great about that?" "They are interesting, you should try it some time," she said with a smile on her face.

Years later I finally did.  I finally stopped and watched people, and for a while it really was interesting.  But its something that’s hard to do, especially today.  It's not hard to do because people are constantly looking down at their cell phones while texting or checking social media websites.  It's hard to watch people because so many people are hurting and it shows.

We live in a world in which everyone is going through something.  Then when you add to that all of the negativity of the news reports,  and the constant complaining that seems to make up our world, you have a lot of hurting people.

Now read that verse again? "For surely it is not angels that He helps, but He helps the offspring of Abraham."  God doesn't help angels (they really don't go through anything to need help I don't guess), but He does help people (the offspring of Abraham).  And of course what the writer of Hebrews is talking about when he says "the offspring of Abraham," are those who have been declared righteous because of their faith.  For you remember the Bible says that "Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness."  So the offspring of Abraham are those who have placed their faith and trust in Jesus Christ, and who have been declared righteous because of that.

So what that verse is saying is God helps those who put their faith in Him.  That's good news isn't it? It lets us know that we have a God who we can run to when the cares of this life are weighing us down, and of course He promises that He will give us rest.  So its good news but its extremely practical news to isn’t it.  We don't have to worry, we just simply have to trust.  Again we do the casting and He does the catching.  "Cast all your cares upon Him because He cares for you."  He gives us strength, and hope, an anchor in times of storm.

But it is also news that should lead us to action.  What do I mean? I mean since God helps those who have placed their faith in Him, we ought to take time to help those who are hurting today as well shouldn't we?  The Bible says "we love because He first loved us."  We reach out in love to others because Jesus loves us.  We take time to help others because Jesus helps us.

So the question becomes how can we help? I would give you one very practical way, tell other people how much you appreciate them and take time to lift them up.  Paul says in Ephesians 1:16, "I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers."  Take time to give thanks for other people, take time to pray for them, and take time to let them know how you feel.  Your words just might be the pick me up that they so desperately need.

God stands ready to help and perhaps one way that He does that is through you.
