Loneliness and Your Health

Psalm 68:6 - "God sets the lonely in families, He leads forth the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land

A recent study suggests that loneliness can be bad for your health.  The study found that being lonely can compromise your immune system and can even lead to heart damage.  The loneliness that the study talks about is not an occasional being alone but a consistent way of life.

This report could be consider earth shattering.  Loneliness is not good for you.  But it shouldn't surprise us should it?  In faact we should know it.  We weren't created to be by ourselves for long periods of time.  In fact we are created in the image of God, which means that we were created for relationships.

What do I mean by that? I mean that our God is a triune God.  He is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  He is the three in one (which is very difficult for our human minds to comprehend).  He is not 3 Gods, but one God in 3 persons.  He is Trinity, and within that He has relationship.  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in constant communion with one another.  And we are created in His image, which means that we are created for relationship.

Part of the good news of the Gospel is that God, Himself the one who created us makes those relationships possible.  He makes it possible for us to have a relationship with Him.  Even though we are separated from Him because of our sin, He sent Jesus to reconcile us to God.  To reconcile us through the blood of the cross.  Through His love, we are forgiven and our sins and washed away, which means that we can now have a relationship with Him.

But not only that He gives us the ability to love.  We love because He first loves us, which means that He gives us the ability to truly love those around us.  He also blesses our lives with people, that is why the Bible says, "every good and perfect gift comes from above."  In other words the people that we have in our lives are gifts from God.  Family, friends, church family, neighbors, and co-workers all gifts from God.  We should be thankful.

Psalm 68 reminds us of what else God does for us, "He sets the lonely in families," and one of the ways that He does that is through the church of Jesus Christ.  The church is not a building but it is a living organism, comprised of people, God's people.  People from all walks of life and from all different backgrounds.  People who can call each other brothers and sisters, because that is what we are and God is our Father.

The church was instituted for many different reasons: to spread the Gospel, to worship Jesus, to pray, to help those who are hurting, to disciple those who are followers of Jesus, ultimately existing to bring glory to God, but also to give people a family.  A family in which people can belong, in which they can love and be loved.  The church can put an end to loneliness, because one of the ways that God sets the lonely in families is through the church of Jesus Christ.  I guess then it would be fair to say that the church is good for your health.

Perhaps a better way to say that would be the church is good for your health when you get involved.  If you just sit back and watch then people don't get to know you and you don't get to know them.  You don't get a chance to use your gifts alongside other followers of Jesus to glorify God.  You become just a spectator.  But if you get involved you become a part of something special, a part of something instituted by God.  A part of something where you can love and be loved.

God truly does set the lonely in families and as Psalm 68:6 says He truly does set us free from our sins and cause us to rejoice.  Loneliness is bad for your health, the study is right.  God however knew that because He created us in His image for relationship, and then in His grace He makes those relationships possible.  And one way that He does that is through the church.  So glorify God by getting involved today, and it'll be good for your health as well.
