Seeing Jesus in Psalm 34 - Many, Many Reasons

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 34

Psalm 34:3 – “O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together.”

Sunday afternoon NFL football has become a cultural phenomenon as every week millions of people all across our country, and all around the world gather together in front of their televisions to cheer on their favorite teams.  Many will wear their team colors, while others will take it a step further and dress in all sorts of elaborate costumes all so they can cheer more effectively for their teams.  Even if a person’s team isn’t playing, they will still watch and cheer and shout and yell, as they pick one of the two teams playing and support them.  It is high drama with lots of suspense and lots of rejoicing.

David tells us in the psalms that we are to rejoice, that we are to shout and yell.  He tells us that we are supposed to magnify the Lord, we are supposed to lift Him up, and we are to do it collectively with the gathered people of God.  We are to rejoice, and we are good at rejoicing.  We rejoice over our favorite sports teams, we rejoice in our accomplishments, we rejoice in our families and in our children.  We are good at rejoicing.  Why? Because we were created to rejoice.  We are created to celebrate, to magnify and to exalt.  Specifically, we are created to magnify and exalt the Lord.  We are created to gather together with God’s children and lift Him up in worship.  We are to rejoice, and in reality we have so much to rejoice in and so much to be thankful for.

David gives us at least a partial list in Psalm 34:

*He answers our prayers (v. 4)

*He takes away our fears (v. 4)

*He takes away our shame (v. 5)

*He saves us from our troubles (v. 6)

*He is always with us (v. 7)

            *He is good (v. 8)

            *He blesses us (v. 8)

            *He is our refuge(v. 8)

*He is our provider (v. 9)

            *He gives life (v. 12)

*He is near to us (v. 18)

*He lifts us up when we are crushed (v. 18)

*He is our redeemer (v. 22)

*He saves and doesn’t condemn His children (v. 22)

Quite an impressive list isn’t it? And it is made even more impressive by the fact that is all happens through one person, the person of Jesus Christ.  He is the one who saves us, who takes away our shame, who promises to “never leave us or forsake us”.  He is the one who is our refuge and our redeemer.  He is the one who lifts us up and strengthens us when we are crushed.  He is the one who saves us and as John 3:17 says, God did not send Jesus “into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him.”  We are already condemned in our sins, Jesus however offers us the chance to be forgiven, the chance to be redeemed, the chance to be saved, and to have the gift of life.  No wonder David calls us to praise and worship, it is what we were created to do, but also we have a Redeemer who is worthy of all of worship and all of our praise.  To God be the glory because He deserves all the glory!
