Training for the Race of Life.....Day 17 (COLD)

Training for the Race of Life…….Day 17 (COLD)
Cold - Wow what a difference a day makes.  Yesterday it was 65 degrees or so and today when I ran it was only 30.  Despite the cold however I headed out the door and began running through my neighborhood.  I know some of the neighbors must think I’m crazy, in fact one of the little boys that live in the back of us yelled at me and one of my running partners the other morning, “why are you 2 running in the cold?”  And I loved the response, “once you make a lap or two you aren’t cold anymore”.  And we really weren’t.
Yet today as I started out I was fairly cold.  I could smell wood burning and new that some of the neighbors were warming themselves by the fire.  As I ran I only saw one other person outside and he wasn’t out for very long and only one car passed me during the whole time I was out.  I didn’t run a long time only about 40 minutes or so, but it amazed me that I really didn’t see anyone in my neighborhood the entire time.  Must be the cold I thought, as everyone was probably behind closed doors, wrapped up in blankets, warming themselves by the fire and trying to keep warm.
But the more I think about it the more I realize that it wasn’t just the cold.  It is the way we live in today’s world.  I can remember as a boy sitting on my Mamaw and Papaw’s porch and having neighbors come over just to chat and visit for a while, but those days are gone aren’t they?  In fact in many cases we rarely know our neighbors anymore.  We have our computers, our TV shows, our smart phones (in fact I wrote much of this while laying in bed on my smart phone), we have our Facebook pages, our blogs, and our whatever elses.  We can shut the door and somehow feel connected to the world but in reality we are not.
Don’t get me wrong I have a Facebook page, I love to “blog”, I use the internet, and I’ve been called a “master texter”, so I won’t say that there is anything inherently wrong with technology (even though as I accidentally erased the blog entry on my smart phone I wasn’t overly happy with it).  But we need to be around other people don’t we? Think about what the Bible says, “as iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”  Jesus put it this way, “love one another” and “love your neighbor as yourself’.  We can’t love people if we don’t know them can we?  Paul adds to that in Galatians 6:10, “as you have opportunity do good to all people.”  In the midst of our technology driven world, we don’t need to forget about one of our greatest blessings, and that is people.  We need to be looking for opportunities to meet people, to love people, to share Jesus with people (yes you can do this through a blog, through an internet site, or through Facebook, but you can also do it face to face), and to help people as they run the race of life.
We as followers of Jesus are to be salt and light in the world.  In other words we are to impact culture.  We can certainly do that through technology, but we can also do it on a one on one basis as we get to know people, and as we do what the Bible says and love people.
Keep running with Jesus this week and look for your divine opportunities to help someone else as they “run the race of life” as well.
