John 3:7 - "Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.'"

Austin and I were the first ones up today which led to some interesting conversations.  "Daddy, when will baby Lane be born again?" he asked.  He was meaning tell me again when Lane is going to be born.  But he put two words together that reminded me of the words of Jesus.  "Do not marvel that I said to you, You must be born again."

What does it mean to be "born again"? And why do we need to be "born again."  Being born again certainly means that we are changed.  It means that we are transformed.  It means that we become followers of Jesus Christ.  We become different people.  When we repent of our sins and we place our faith in Jesus Christ then we truly do become born again.  Born of Jesus' blood that He shed on the cross.

Being born again means that our sins are forgiven, that our lives are changed, that we can now come into the presence of Almighty God because we are His children, and that we have the hope of a heavenly home to look forward to.  Being born again means a lot more wonderful things as well, but those are some of the things that it means to be born again.

Why do we need to be born again? One word, SIN.  We are born sinners (Psalm 51) and sin messes everything up. In fact God is a holy God and cannot tolerate sin, so if we are going to ever enter into the presence of God we must have our sins washed away.  If we are going to truly be able to pray we must have our sins washed away.  If we are going to claim the promise of heaven and one day inherit that promise we must have our sins washed away.  The only way that that is possible is to be born again.  To be born again by repenting of those sins and placing our faith in Jesus.  Then and only then are we truly born again.  Remember Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the Life."  He gives us life and He enables us to be born again by His truth.  He is the only way.

Austin asked "when will baby Lane be born again?"  He will be born in a couple of days, but my prayer for him and for all of my boys is that they are also born again.  That they know the truth of Jesus, that they follow Him as the Way, and that they accept Him as the Life.  I anticipate the birth of my son, but I look even more forward to the day when all of my sons are born again.  It is what I hope for, what I pray for, and in reality it is all that ultimately matters.
