Just a few days ago, I stood outside on a beautiful fall like day and was amazed by the beauty of God's creation.  However that serene moment lasted just a moment as the silence was broken by the haunting sounds of taps being played on a bugle.  I was attending the funeral for my uncle who passed away last Saturday night and as I stood there listening to the bugle being played I was struck by what those sounds actually mean.  They actually mean sacrifice.

The armed forces were participating in this funeral service because my uncle had sacrificed many years ago for his country.  He had made a sacrifice so that we could be free.  Of course my uncle is certainly not the only person to have ever made this sacrifice, in fact some of given their very lives in sacrifice for our country.  And those men and women are certainly to be commended.

And yet as I stood there at that graveside I realized that a far greater sacrifice had been made, and that was the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.  He willingly went to the cross and died, sacrificing His very life so that if we would trust in Him and follow Him, we could have life.  LIFE - both eternal and abundant life.  God's sacrifice gives us life.  He died so that we might live.

Even though I loved my uncle, I will admit that it was hard to be sad as I stood there on that day.  It was hard to be sad because my uncle had received that gift of life.  He was following Jesus and because of that I know that he still lives today.  He has inherited the gift of eternal life and because of that it was hard for me to be sad.

Many of you have heard the song "Amazing Grace: My Chains are Gone".  I really, really love that song.  Why? Because of the message and the message is this because of Jesus' sacrifice, because He gave all, we are truly free.  Free in this life and free in the next.  My uncle's chains are gone today and ours can be as well, as we give our hearts to Jesus and as we follow Him as the Way, the Truth, and the LIFE.

Praise be to God for His great sacrifice and for His amazing love.  Through Him we have peace, hope, and joy.  Through Him our chains are gone.
