Romans 8:35 - "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?"

Puritan theologian and pastor John Gill said, "No man, be he ever so vile, is out of the reach of powerful and efficacious grace."  What a thought! There is no one out of the reach of God's love.  This was a common theme in my reading this morning.  Another quote I saw said "You cannot outsin the grace of God.  His love is greater than our sin."  When you put those two quotes together what it says is this, "there is no person that God cannot save, and once you are saved there is no way to lose that salvation."

To me that is the best news in the world.  We live in a performance oriented world.  In the sporting world people are given huge contracts when they perform and if they are a coach they lose their job when they don't.  In the job market people move up the corporate ladder based on performance.  Kids are given grades at school based on performance.  I remember a teacher at my high school saying, "don't say I gave you your grade whether it’s an A or an F, I didn't give it to you, you earned it."

We are evaluated all the time based on performance.  So when we read in the Bible about God's amazing grace that comes to us based on nothing that we have done, we have a hard time processing it.  We think I've got to earn it.  And then when we realize that we cannot lose that salvation that we don't have to work to keep it we are amazed.  It doesn't make sense.  We think we ought to have to earn it.  But we don't.  It is freely given to us.  And then once we repent of our sins and place our faith in Jesus we know that Romans 8:35 applies to us, "nothing can separate us from the love of Christ."  That nothing includes us.  Not even us and our sins can separate us from the love of God.  That makes me want to break out into song, "Blessed assurance Jesus is mine oh what a foretaste of glory divine."  God's love is amazing.  It reaches to heights and depths that we cannot even begin to fathom, but all the while it is there freely for us.

It is comforting to know today that I am loved no matter what.  I will make mistakes, I will stumble, I will fall but God's grace is extended to me.  "His power is made perfect in my weaknesses."  I am loved no matter my performance, no matter what I do, Jesus loves me.  Some people say that when we really believe that that it leads us into sin.  After all we can do what we want and God still loves us.

For me however it says this, since God really does love me no matter what, since He really did go to the cross for me, since He is the high priest who has atoned for my sins I want to love Him and I want to serve Him.  I want to follow Him even more.  If God is that good to me then I want to serve Him.  I love Him because He first loved me, and He loves me no matter what.

That frees us up today and everyday to love God with all of our hearts and to love people with unselfish abandon.  We are already loved so we don't have to love people just so they will love us in return.  We are already loved by God, that is all we need, so now we are free to love other people unselfishly and to love God with all of our hearts.

I'm glad today that the words of Romans 8, one of the crown jewels of Scripture are true, that nothing can separate us from the love of God, and I'm glad that that nothing includes me.  His love is simply amazing!
