Training for the Race of Life.....Day 23 (Crosstraining)

Training for the Race of Life……Day 23 (Cross training)
This morning because the temperature was so cold, I passed on running outside.  I had an opportunity to go with a friend to a local indoor track and run there around 6:45 am but because of the snow on the ground (and in my thinking on the roads) I passed on that as well.  Hindsight says I probably should have went and ran because the snow really wasn’t all that bad. Yet when I looked out my window at 6:00 am, the moon on the crest of the new fallen snow said I should probably stay home.
Yesterday didn’t present any other opportunities to run, just simply because there was a lot of other things that needed to be accomplished.  Last night however I decided to return to our Tuesday night basketball game at church.  We have been playing almost every Tuesday night at the church for almost 4 years (I’ve only been there for 3 and half of them or so).  Everything that I read in running suggests that you do some sort of cross-training (swimming, biking, the elliptical machine, an aerobic class, P90x, or some sort of sport).  So I guess you could say last night I cross trained.
I used to play and come home and be extremely tired and dragging, but thanks to running that wasn’t the case last night.  Of course before we would play for 2 hours or more and last night I decided to just play for an hour and then come home to the family and spend a little time with them.
I like the idea of cross training.  It works other muscle groups and skills that you normally aren’t working and hopefully in the long run (no pun intended) it will make you a better runner.  I enjoyed the basketball to be sure, the competition and the camaraderie between the guys as we played was nice.  I hadn’t been in a while and it was nice to be back.
Yet as much as I like basketball and as much as I like the idea of cross training, I like the name of cross-training even better.  For as a follower of Jesus Christ, I believe that we ought to be cross trained.  In fact Jesus told His followers that “we must daily take up our cross, and follow Him.”  And of course Jesus went to the cross and died so that the sins of all people could be forgiven, and He offers us that free gift if we just repent of those sins and follow Him.  So needless to say I think we all should be cross-trained.  We all should allow the love of God (displayed on the cross) to change us and transform us.  We all should die to ourselves (as Jesus did on the cross) so that we might truly live and truly follow Jesus who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.  If you are running, work in a cross training session every now and then, and as you are living, live cross trained each and everyday.
Keep running for Jesus and for the glory of God.
