Training for the Race of Life.....Day 29 (Comfort Zones)

Training for the Race of Life……Day 29 (Comfort Zones)
I was cautioned by one of my training partners a few weeks ago, “don’t get comfortable as you run,” meaning I think you can go faster or you can run farther or you can run better.  And as I thought about that over the weekend while I was recovering from my run on Friday I realized that I had become very comfortable in the way that I run.  Comfortable in the pace and even sometimes comfortable in the distance (even though that certainly wasn’t the case on Friday).
Well as I studied some of the marathon training plans that I am somewhat blending together I was drawn to one that will certainly make my uncomfortable this week.  You do cruise intervals (which means you run a little faster than you normally do for a certain distance) on one day, then on another day you do speed training, and on another day you do hill training, and of course you also have the long slow run.  Even though this is a week that I get to dial the distance back a little bit for my long run on Friday.
So needless to say I don’t think I’m going to be comfortable in my runs for this week and that is a good thing (I think).  Sometimes we aren’t comfortable in life either are we.  And in fact sometimes in life we need to get out of our comfort zones.  We become comfortable in just going through the motions, offering up the same prayers, doing the same things.  Comfortable even in our sins and giving into temptation.
Jesus tells a story about a Good Samaritan in the Gospel of Luke, and this story is about a man who gets out of his comfort zone.  He sees another man lying beside the road beaten and bruised and almost dead.  The comfortable thing to do would have been to run right on by and really do nothing. But this man chose to get uncomfortable.  He stooped down checked on the man, had compassion on him, bound his wounds (that couldn’t have been comfortable), and took care of him.  He even picked him up, put him on his horse and took him to a local inn and paid for his lodging while he recovered.  Needless to say he wasn’t comfortable in doing most of those things.  And yet because he chose to get uncomfortable something good happened.
So are you comfortable tonight? Do you need to get outside of your comfort zone.  Do you need to pray, “God work through me”, earnestly and sincerely because when you do that you just might get uncomfortable at how God works through you.  But you will find that God’s ways are always best and you will find that He has used you in ways that you couldn’t even imagine.
So keep running but sometimes run uncomfortably, and keep living for Jesus.
