Training for the Race of Life....Day 47 (People)

Training for the Race of Life……Day 47 (Family)
Today was New Year’s Eve and even more importantly than that it was my wife’s birthday.  So instead of running today I decided to take a day of rest and just simply spend time with her and my family.  It became a very special day, a great way to end one year and a great reminder of what is important as we head into a New Year.
For lunch we went out to eat with our families and had a good time just talking and being together.  Then that evening I planned a surprise party for my wife at a local bowling alley.  She used to love to bowl and it was a place where we could get together with friends and family and talk and have fun, and not have to worry about how loud the kids were getting.  It was a great night.  Of course my wife figured out what we were doing before we went but as the old saying goes, it’s the thought that counts.
The first game my wife absolutely wore everyone out that was bowling close to us and needless to say she rubbed it in just a little bit.  I heard later on that one of our friends actually beat her that first game, but he was 5 lanes away from us and she definitely handled everyone that was real close to us, especially me.  As I said it was a fun night.
But as I looked around I couldn’t help but smile and be thankful.  Thankful for the people that God had placed within my life.  I was filled up with joy because of them.  Family, friends, people who were a part of the family of God.  I was reminded of a song from days gone by, “I’m so glad I’m a part of the family of God, I’ve been cleansed by His Spirit, been washed in His blood.” (that’s not exactly right but its close).
Its good to be part of God’s family and its good to take time to celebrate and be thankful for the people that God has blessed your lives with.  In fact as we close out one year and go into another, I think it would make a great New Year’s resolution: to take time in 2011 to cherish the people that Gods puts in your lives.  To pray for them, to love them, to care for them, to listen to them, to spend time with them, to rejoice when they rejoice, and to weep when they weep.  To encourage them, to pray with them, and just simply to love them.  Jesus says that life is all about “loving God with all of your heart, your mind, your soul, and your strength and loving your neighbor as yourself.”  And truly that is what we need to be doing throughout our lives, lets focus on it in 2011 as we journey together on this journey that we call life.
Have a Happy New Year and keep running with Jesus.
