Training for the Race of Life.....Day 6

Training for the Race of Life……Day 6
The Destination - Today was race day.  I participated in the Ferguson Freeze 5k (3.1 miles) this morning, and had a goal time set of 32 minutes.  I was able to beat that time as I ran a personal best coming in, in 30 minutes and 42 seconds, I would have been a little faster but I took a wrong turn along the way.
I was in the process of congratulating myself when I approached a man wearing a FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) T-shirt.  We began talking and I asked him how he did.  He said “I think they said 20:15”.  I was thinking 20 what? 24, 25, 26?  But then I realized that he said just 20.  Amazing.  He was very encouraging however he said the more you run in these kind of races the more your time will drop and it will probably drop significantly.  I hope he is right, but even if he isn’t and I continue to run 29 to 31 minute 5ks, its ok.  Why? Because there is joy in the journey.  Joy in the destination no matter what.
I especially liked the event today (Ferguson Freeze 5k, outside of Johnson City, TN), because the people along the course who were directing you were very encouraging.  “You’re doing great sir” “Keep up the good work.”  One even tried to motivate me when he yelled, “you can catch those ladies up ahead sir, don’t let them beat you.”  It was the laugh I needed as I started up the final hill.
At the finish line, people cheered for you and celebrated you finishing the course.  I couldn’t help but be reminded of the words of Hebrews  12:1, “therefore since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”  In the Christian life we are being watched.  Watched by the world, watched by other Christians, watched by Jesus, and watched by those who have passed away in the faith.  (Read Revelation 6:9-11 as well).  Because of that we ought to run hard, we ought to run determined, we ought to run our best.  We ought to do just what  Hebrews says “and lay aside the sins that entangle us.”  We ought to run as Jesus ran.  Knowing that there are people cheering us on, encouraging us, praying for us, and loving us.  And when we reach the destination we will hear, “well done good and faithful servant, enter in.”  And who knows perhaps there will be some at the gate cheering us on as well.
