Training for the Race of Life.....Day 64 (Playaing It Safe)

Training for the Race of Life…..Day 64 (Playing It Safe)
As I awoke this morning and even as I went to bed last night I envisioned myself running at least 10 miles today.  Unfortunately soon after the day started I realized that there was just no way that that was going to happen.  It was shaping up to be an extremely busy day and my ankle was hurting as bad as it had hurt in a while.  I knew that I didn’t need to run at least for any long distances today.  So I decided to play it safe.
I used the elliptical machine and then I went to the treadmill for a few minutes.  If you are not familiar with an elliptical machine it is basically like a stand up bike that allows you to run on pedals so there is virtually no impact on your body.  I set the machine on a “hills” program to make it a little more difficult and more like running.  It was a very good workout as I was sweating very quickly but I will confess that I missed running.  But I knew that I needed to play it safe.
We need to play it safe in life don’t we? What do I mean by that”? I mean this we need to make sure that we are making the most of the life that God has given us and that we are not doing anything to hinder that life whether it is physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually.  Jesus says He came so that “we might have life and have it more abundantly.”  Which means He came so that we might live life unhindered, safe in the arms of God.
How do we do that? As I thought about that question my mind was drawn to Psalm 1: “How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, not stand in the path of sinners, not sit in the seat of scoffers, but his delight is in the law of the Lord and in His law he meditates day and night, He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water….”  I ran on the elliptical today so I wouldn’t do any harm to myself.  Well when we fill our minds and our lives up with the word of God and the law of God we certainly don’t do any harm to ourselves.  In fact we do just the opposite we prepare ourselves to be closer to God and to enjoy the “abundant life” that He wants to give to us.
We need to make sure that we aren’t getting around people who pull us down and harm us (even though from time to time we do need to be around them to be a positive influence to them).  We need to however make sure that we are filling ourselves up with the things of God because that is what we were created for.  God created us for a relationship with Him, and anything that gets in the way of that isn’t safe.  In fact it damages us and we need to stay away from it.
So keep running with Jesus and make sure that you are running and living safely.
